Google Offers live in the Bay Area, NYC and Portland OR

Groupon had the opportunity to sell to Google for $6B (Billion with a B) not too long ago, with Google launching offers do you think they are kicking themselves for not taking it? I know many readers of popular PR/Marketing Blog spinsucks.com thought so when Gini Dietrich wrote “My Groupon Prediction” and got me interested in the subject.

Creeping out of the woodwork it seems Google Offers Beta is now operating in several major metro Markets including NYC, Portland, OR, Oakland/East Bay, San Francisco and reportedly coming soon to Austin, Boston, Denver, Seattle and Washington D.C.

Google Offers Beta Locations

In all likelihood the entry of Google into this space may not indicate the end for Groupon, but how much is enough to satisfy the founders and investors in Groupon?

Exporting Facebook contacts to Google+. Facebook > Yahoo > G+ = #win

I was really disapointed when Facebook slammed the door shut on the friend exporter. I don’t even think the app was live for 24 hours before it was blocked. There is a way to bypass Facebooks desire to prevent this from occurring and here you go!

Here is how you can reliablyimport your Facebook friends into Google+1. Set up a Yahoo email address on http://mail.yahoo.com/
2. Click on the Contacts tab in Yahoo Mail and import the contacts from Facebook (see image)
3. Click on the Circles tab in Google+ and connectYahoo Mail (see image)While the import step 2. is manual, and you might want to periodically repeat it, the connection on step 3. o Yahoo Mail and Google+ is automatic, and persistent.

You will find the new contacts coming from Facebook automatically suggested by Google and you can drag them into the circle of your choice!

Google opens and closes the spigot for Google+ invites. #sm #news

So thanks to an invite from Diane Bjorling (a long time friend on Amplify) I was able to connect to Google+ tonight. I have to say initial response is very positive. In typical Google fashion they did something “different” time will tell if it really hits the sweet spot that will cause it to challenge Facebook. Was great to see a lot of familiar faces and I sent a bunch of invites as well, hope you got one of them in time before it was shut down!

We’ve shut down invite mechanism for the night. Insane demand. We need to do this carefully, and in a controlled way. Thank you all for your interest!

Google Steps up Email Marketing Efforts

I noted a very significant event in the form of an Email from Google encouraging me to “focus more on analytics, less on IT hassles” this morning. As an Analytics customer they used that as an opportunity to send the first of it’s kind marketing Email. Obviously Google is ready to challenge and market their services more aggressively at this point.

I cannot help but wonder if this is the tip of the iceberg in a larger campaign to push additional services to individuals and firms that are using many of Google’s free tools. What are your thoughts?

Google Site Speed Ranking Game Changer

I noticed some major changes to my search results from Google today. I double checked them right after reading this article on REELSEO. This will be a game changer and it is likely to have some positive implications for internet performance. I think website owners got a little complacent in the age of uber fast broadband. Many of us stopped paying attention to load times, and if you look back to the days of dial-up Internet access – load time was king. So what have we created? In many ways a bloated version of the internet.

I recommend you check some of your key search terms today and see if they’ve benefited or been hurt by these changes. REELSEO had a great list of tools to check your website speed performance several I have used and one I have not:

  • Page Speed, which is a Firefox add-on that evaluates the performance of web pages and even offers tips for enhancement.
  • YSlow, a free tool from Yahoo! that suggests ways to improve website speed.
  • WebPagetest, which offers data on site load performance.
  • Webmaster Tools, which shows your site’s speed performance data.

Website operators – Any time the game changes there is opportunity to disrupt. The question is which side will you be on?
