Why I need more Female Subscribers (Video)

If you’ve followed me for a while you probably now I am sort of a throw everything at the wall and see what sticks kind of guy when it comes to web 2.0 and social media. I’ve tried all kinds of different services, honestly I’ve lost track. I only stick to the ones that seem worth continuing. One of my long term commitments has been YouTube.

One of the really nice things about Youtube is the Insights module, you can really see a lot of information including:

  • Total views of all of your videos
  • Date ranges of views
  • Where geographically your videos are most popular
  • Which videos are getting the line share of views
  • How long your videos keep peoples attention
  • A nice “at a glance” graph of recent days views
  • Demographics of your viewers
  • Where your viewers discover your videos
  • Engagement or which videos are most commented on
  • Subscription figures

That is a long list and it’s not even complete, for purposes of this article I am going to focus on demographics. Specifically Joesgonesocial needs women. What? Just look:

Joesgonesocial on Youtube Demographics

11% Female?

Come on ladies, can you help me out here? Joking aside it makes sense. My most popular posts are about Windows 7 and Android apps:

Joesgonesocial Techie Videos

This is not to say that women don’t like those things, but I think in general they are more guy friendly. In my defense I have seen the female % go as high as 38% a few times, this number was so low that it compelled me to blog about it and grovel a bit. I am hoping with some of my female readers help I can turn that sinking ship around, what do you say ladies?

Here is a screen cast I recorded on Insights while putting this article together.

Louis Gray Interview on Blog Talk Radio (Podcast)

Louis GraySince I’ve loved and worked with or used technology for most of my adult life, I knew that I would enjoy chatting with Louis again (the last time was with @egoldstein and it was about Amplify – listen here). I was first introduced to Louis in 2009 when I started following him on Twitter and occasionally reading his blog. During the interview Louis really lays out what it takes to be successful at blogging, I think there is something for everyone there. We also discussed his involvement as VP of Marketing at My6sense. It was obvious that Louis is excited to be a part of the company. I’ve installed it on my Android tonight and the first impression is very good, the UI is incredibly clean and stunning on my Motorola Droid phone. I will share more on it once I get some time using it. I’d rather you listen to the podcast then get the blow by blow here. I will just say if you have any interest in technology, new media, etc, this will be a great show to listen to. Louis has a very high level of knowledge and one thing I noticed is in spite of not having prepared any Q&A for this (we spoke for 5-6 minutes before the interview – and much of that small talk/sound check) he responds quickly to every question. I didn’t realize it until I was reflecting back on the interview while writing this.

Also I asked Louis to share some resources that people will want to check out, here are some people and blogs you might want to watch or connect with:

Fuzemeeting Does Android

Fuzemeeting delivered a Droid client for there service and I had to install it. Of course then I had to sign up for a trial so don’t be surprised if you get a webinar invite from me in the near future! Check out the cool use of the QR code:

Radar Now Application for Android Phones

I love opening up the Android Marketplace on my Droid Phone and checking out the latest apps. This is a video of the Radar Now application for the Android Phone Operating system. I am using and demonstrating this app on my Verizon Droid Phone. It is a very useful app particularly if you are travelling and need access to some recent weather radar coverage. I wish I had this years ago when I did a lot of camping

Droid Must Have Task Manager Application

The first application you should download is one of the Task Manager apps. These applications allow you to kill extra programs that you do not want running or failed applications that might have hung or crashed. I’ve only seen the latter once but it was nice to be able to stop it without resetting my phone. The kill function is very responsive, similar to a Unix type environment.

Droid Does Wifi Analysis for Free

Don’t waste your money on expensive Wifi Analyzer hardware and software just pickup a Droid phone and download the Wifi Analyzer utility for free. This tool is useful in identifying networks that overlap and will allow you to determine if you’ve made the right decisions about the channel your wireless device is using. You can quickly and easily see if there is a strong wifi signal that overlaps yours. Unlike my example you should perform this analysis where you intend to USE your wifi client devices most. Here is a video demonstration for more clarity:

Verizon Comes Through and Droid Does

Earlier this week I watched a Youtube video about Google visual search or Google Goggles. It was the last in a series of things that I had seen and read about droid as a Blackberry user. For years I have been a Blackberry guy, by far it was the undisputed Email king. The problem is Email is only a fraction of my social and business interaction today. I am very active on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn. I’ve also found my Blackberry 8830 seriously lacking the power to handle a Twitter client and it’s really cramped my style in the R&D department. There are so many “Killer” apps out there right now, I don’t even know where to start, but I will say that I can now participate. Yesterday I called Verizon to find out what my upgrade options were and after a conversation with a representative at a local store I was set to go pick up a Motorola Droid today. It was not without some complication, apparently I had been given some incorrect information by a rep at the local Verizon store. Without getting into too fine of details I ended up asking for a regional managers phone number which the store manager promptly gave me and a $100 bump in the price was averted. Verizon did step up but not on the front lines, word to the wise – ask for a higher up manager if you’re not getting satisfaction on an issue. As of this moment I am the proud owner of a Motorola Droid phone and I am completely blown away by how cool this phone is. As a long time technology geek this is nothing short of a kid in the candy store experience for me. I intend to follow up this article with more information on what I’ve been able to do with the Droid that I feel will interest others.
